Today, November 21, 2016, I get to change the ‘about’ page on my blog! I’m changing my age from ’49’ to ’50’! Today, my theme songs will be Kacey Musgrave’s “Follow Your Arrow”, 50 Cent’s “In Da Club”, and Chris Tomlin’s “How Can I Keep From Singing.” Just like me, my music taste is eclectic and different. But all good! – you have to say that with Matthew McConaughey voice in “Dazed and Confused.”
I am one of those crazies that is excited to turn 50. I had a stretch of time that I thought I wouldn’t see 47 or 48…and in my younger days, I was so rebellious, it’s a miracle I survived. God wasn’t and isn’t finished with me on this planet yet.
Fast forward to 2016, and I’m still here! God has blessed me with more years on this earth, and another to come, or as my good friend says, “another trip around the sun!” Don’t get me wrong, those years that started in September of 2012 were a struggle, but I learned so much about who God is and how much He loves me. I got to “live like I was dyin'” as Tim McGraw sings. It’s true. You try to love deeper and come to grips with your Maker and your mortality. It’s good. Or rather, it all works for good somewhere down the line.
So , I’ve been excited for months – it’s weird. And then in the past few weeks, I started to really not care. My personal life took some hits, my pride got in the way, money was and is tight, and I let my joy slip away, just a little. My excitement just all fell apart.
So TODAY, I’m getting my happy back. I’m praising God, and pondering on 50.
50 – what a cool number! Half a century. 50 Cent. Half-piece. Quinquagenarian – how many of you have heard that one? Semi-centennial. Jubilee year. Five-O! The atomic number of tin. The fifth magic number in nuclear physics. The percent of genetic overlap of a full sibling, a parent, and offspring. There are 50 states in the USA. In the 1994 action movie Speed, which depicts a Los Angeles cop (Keanu Reeves), who must rescue civilians on a bus that has a bomb rigged to it which will detonate if the bus’s speed drops below 50 mph. I ain’t droppin’ below 50, so keep that bus moving!
And by the way, it’s Troy Aikman’s 50th today, too! So, Happy Birthday Troy!
It is also, and more importantly, Thanksgiving week, and I am THANKFUL! I can’t wait to see what this year has in store. It will be a tough year. It will also be good.
I am thankful for the many family and friends who love me more than I deserve. I am thankful for my adult son. I love watching him as a man and being his friend. I love the beautiful day and weather God provided today. I love the present! And the past, and the future…
I am grateful for all the gifts and blessings God provides.
